The Smile

Today I broke

Just for a while

I couldn’t even

Find my smile

My trusty smile

That’s always there

I couldn’t find it

Anywhere

I looked up high

And looked down low

With no idea

Where it could go

I called on friends

And family too

I looked in deep

To help me through

I found some things

Deep down inside

That I had tried

So hard to hide

It seems that they

Came up for air

To remind me that

They are still there

And need my love

And need my care

Or they’re not going

Anywhere

And so I held them

In my heart

And opened up

To this new start

A life so changed

And turned around

That I haven’t quite

Stood on the ground

But now it’s time

To start to see

That smile is there

That smile is me

That life can throw us

Heavy loads

And opportunities

To help us grow

When tears rise up

From deep inside

That there’s no need

To run and hide

But just to sit

And pause a while

And through the tears

Returns the smile
