The Silent War
Day 63/365: a humorous documentary poem on married life

I move
the toothpaste
from my side
of the counter
to the other
where there is space
and
more room
yet it always
finds it's way back
across the pond
of the sink.
I move
the shower head
down
so it no longer
hits me
in the middle
of my face.
You cut on
hour seven
of doom and gloom
"news"
which you snooze
and
snore to
while holding
the remote
declaring
"I'm not"
why can we never
watch
anything happy
and loving
especially as you sleep
I ponder
closing the curtains
you call "blinds".
You ask if we
have any
peanuts
you mean cashews?
we don't.
So you munch
on singular pieces
of popcorn
from a bowl
full of hundreds,
mouth open
so it echoes
across the canyon
of the couch.
war.
unspoken.
it is a wonder
the country of us
survives.
