The Silent Symphony
How we lost the music between words

We used to hear the silent notes
That floated in the air between
The hurried texts and online quotes -
The music that remained unseen.
The pause before a kiss so sweet,
The breath held after something funny,
The rhythm of the walking feet
That made the ordinary sunny.
But now we live in constant sound -
The pings and rings and digital beats,
Our ears to all the noise are bound
While missing life's most precious treats.
We've amplified the trivial,
The viral and the loud and crude,
While letting go the essential
In our constant rush for something new.
The quiet understanding glance
Across a crowded, noisy room,
The poetry of simple chance,
The silence that can lift the gloom.
The rustle of the turning page,
The kettle's soft and rising steam,
The wisdom of a different age
That visits us within a dream.
We've tuned our ears to hear the shout,
The controversial and the bold,
While all the subtle tunes throughout
Life's symphony remain untold.
But sometimes in the quiet night,
When all the screens are put away,
We might still hear if we listen right
The music of a better day.
The cricket's song outside the door,
The rain's soft rhythm on the glass,
The things that matter to the core
The melodies that truly last.
So let us turn the volume down
On all the artificial noise,
And seek the precious, golden sound
Of life's authentic, simple joys.
For in the spaces between words,
In pauses between notes we play,
Is where the sweetest music's heard
Don't let it all just fade away.
