i watch the steam rise
from the old grey river
like everything existing
it was born & grew up
its spirit looks upon me
with its cavernous eyes
while phantoms dance
above a rippled surface
enticing me to open the
door for the darkness &
truth it offered up for me
then i looked down to see
i had trod in a donut that
broke the whispery spell
& i almost smiled-almost
