The Last Place You Look

By Scott C LillardPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Where am I going?

Down the hall

Open the door

Flip the switch

Not behind the toilet

Not under the sink

Not inside the shower drain

Come on, Guy: think

I’m sure I put the keys away

Before I had sat down

But they’re not in their normal place

I really need to go

The cat looks like Gmork

I love that movie

Couldn’t get past the horse dying

As a kid

But I’ve never known a real horse

Never cared to

Not one for animals in general

Except this dumb cat

I could get a dog

But dogs need real care

Unlike this jerk

And they’ll drink from the toilet

Even if I put the seat down—

Did I drop them in the toilet??

Crap, crap , crap

Through the den

Past the table

Down the hall

Open the door

Flip the switch

Raise the lid

No keys

They wouldn’t flush…

Would they?

Stop it

Lower the lid

Flip the switch

Close the door

Up the hall

Past the den

Into the kitchen

Nothing on this counter

Nothing on this counter

Nothing on this counter

Oh, a cookie!

I should take up baking

I’d make great cookies

I know what people want

In their baked goods

Unlike music

Could have toured

Could have made it big

But I left the band

To pursue “happiness”

Which money can’t buy

But it sure would have helped

Hope those jerks appreciate

Their rights to the songs

I wrote

I guess everybody takes

What isn’t theirs

Sometimes

I’m no exception

I’ve joined in glory

I did not deserve

Meow

Not feeding time yet, Cat.

Like that project in high school

But I was sick!

Better for me to stay home

Than to risk others’ health

Meow

Shush.

Why am I peering

Into the fridge?

What was I looking for?

Ugh, keys

Past the den

Down the hall

Living room

Under the couch

Over the couch

Behind the TV

Under the shelf

Like Bilbo looking for his ring

Was he as frantic in the book

As in the film?

I don’t remember

Man those films were good

Carlos doesn’t think so

I thought they had good characters

You’ve got to adapt books

Appropriately to the new format

And the score was amazing

I’m good

I could never do that

The original Halo trilogy

Had great scores too

O’Donnell, like Shore

Really inserts a sense of culture

And history

And feeling

And circumstance

Into the music

Music really matters

Even when lyrics fail

Good music

Can save a song

Or maybe not

Up the hall

Bedroom door

Flip the switch

Ah, you’re in here now, Cat

But really

Why does music move us?

What was playing

When that horse died?

Why am I still thinking

Of that horse?

Don’t cry, Dude

Don’t cry

Don’t - CRYYYYYYYY

You’re not alone

Don’t - CRYYYYYYYY

Tonight

My baby

Seal

That’s another one

And the Beatles

Well, mostly

I wonder what it’s like

To change so many lives

Can you ever

Truly

Appreciate

Your own impact

I’m only impacted

By my dumb ca…

Wait

In the back door

Through the kitchen

Down the hall

Around the corner

Open the door

Flip the switch

Back to the bed

Pick up the cat

Under the cat

Of course

Now

I’m on my way!

Kiss the cat

Flip the switch

Up the hall

Through the den

Open the door

Out the door

Close the door

Lock the door

Unlock the car

Open the car

Sit in the seat

Okay, wait

Where was I going?
