I saw a hawk today

He isn't very majestic

I saw a hawk splayed out on the roadside today

His wings are wrecked, a wasted mess

I saw a hawk crumpled in the slush and the road-salt today

He isn't rotting yet

His feathers are ruined and clotted with ice

Winter is forcing him to linger a while longer

I saw a hawk today

He should have been flying

But he is dead

For no reason

There's no such thing as a happy carcass

But a wild bird plastered to the earth and banished forever from the freedom of the sky

That's gotta be one of the worst
