The Role I Choose

A Mother’s Poem

By AtiqbuddyPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

I would rather carry the name of “Mother”

than chase the name of “friend,”

For friendships come and friendships go,

but my children last till the end.

I would rather stand as “Mother”

than as someone’s perfect child,

For their love pours freely into me,

while yours feels thin and mild.

I would rather live as “Mother”

than shine as a worker bright,

For my children ache when I am gone,

while a job forgets me overnight.

I would rather choose “Mother”

over cousin, niece, or kin,

For my children gave me life anew,

a fire that burns within.

I would rather be “Mother”

than a sister who must bend,

For they have brought me calm and peace,

while you became the storm, my friend.

I would rather be “Mother”

than wear any title you see,

For my children love me endlessly,

while your love has bounds with me.

And though I dream of gentler days

where no roles pull apart,

If asked to choose just one for life,

I’ll choose them with all my heart.
