Peeking out of the car window,

my throat ached with the weight

of a scream I couldn’t release.

Eyes brimming —

hoping no one would notice

the way I winced when I moved.

Silently sitting among them all,

surrounded by people and noise

I cried without shedding a tear.

I heard them — yet couldn’t hear myself.

Every word blurred before it reached me,

Like eyes on a deathbed.

I wanted to cry from my chest,

But I knew they’d belittle me.

Long sighs came with no relief,

and every breath felt heavy.

They say it’s hell below —

But could it really be worse than this?

Even the street dog looked happier,

his tail wagging

as if life had never betrayed him.

Why, god — why me?

A howl no one heard.

And then we reached home.

I smiled.

Laughed.

Pretended like nothing had ever cracked.

And no one ever knew

I almost broke apart on that ride.
