The Pyramid of Intersection

A hierarchy of privilege

As I make my ascent,

up the pyramid of intersection,

I wonder if this is what Maslow meant

by self-actualization;

The multitude of factors

contributing to my oppression,

lowering the probability

of any true progression.

———

As I build up the courage

to share my gender identity,

to the pride population

that emphasizes individuality,

I quickly uncover the truth,

revealing strong cultural animosity;

It's stunning how segregated we are,

even when striving for equality.

———

As I fight for my right

to my reproductive organs,

I must also battle the belief

that I am exotic and foreign.

My physical disability adds

another layer to my misfortune.

How could anyone reach transcendence,

from this forever-expanding margin?

———

As I tend to my battle wounds,

I clearly see all the divisions in our society,

despite how much any one movement

claims to promote inclusivity.

It's the rule, not the exception,

to have the presence of selectivity;

Every higher stage of fulfillment,

refusing paths to upward mobility.
