The Powers of a Mother

Here's some music to go with the poem!

Didn’t you know?

Mothers are born with superpowers.

They’re not all supernatural, but they are super in every right.

Let’s start with the way she always made you feel safe and sound at night,

How her kisses could seemingly warm you up inside,

How seeing her words empowered you with pride.

Her kisses could heal any wound in no time.

Even when she didn’t have much, she came through every time—

Maybe even more.

Even when your tears hit the floor,

She could read your mind and instantly knew what you adored.

Mothers are your first gift from the Lord,

Even when not bound by blood, there’s no way you could doubt it.

Some say, “Blood is thicker than water,”

But let me correct you about it.

The true saying goes:

“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”

Wasn’t it amazing how your mother faced impending doom,

Then walked out of the fire seemingly without a wound?

She always had super hearing when it came to you.

You knew I was going to mention the strength of a woman too.

Best believe they hold everything together

Like super glue, and with a snap of her fingers—

Ta-da! Delicious food.

She could make you an outfit faster than a wave of a wand could do.

Unfortunately, when she is alone,

Her strength is that times two.

Mom leaps into action for you

Quicker than Spider-Man could do.

Let’s not forget her sixth sense for a lie,

Or the glowing red eyes when you’re acting up on the fly.

The way she could shape-shift into whoever you needed,

Whenever you needed it.

The way a mother always knows the right things to say

To keep you going,

To boost your resolve without even knowing

The details of the situation.

She’ll go through more rounds than Muhammad Ali

Against a sickness that’s not even hers.

She beautifully crafts a young man or woman

To face this big world.

The presence of your mother transforms you

Into the best version of yourself.

And if someone dares touch her child—

It’s a terrifying sight for the opposition

Under the wrath of a mother.

And it makes you bitter to see your mother struggling.

She smiles and tells you she’ll be okay,

Even when she’s clearly not.

You wish you could fix it with all you’ve got,

But you know it’s all for naught.

So, you do the little things—

And for her, that’s enough.

That’s when she knows that even though she’s losing now,

Her victory is real.

Because she’s proud of you,

And she knows you’re going to make it through.

Even when she didn’t have a clue what to do,

She had faith in you.

And like Tupac said,

“You are appreciated.”

So, take a few hours to thank her.

Even if you’ve had disagreements or arguments with Mom,

You know she’ll be there without hesitation.

Hug your mother and tell her the greatest gift she’s given you

Is the gift of life—

And her presence in it.

She was blessed with the ability to create life

In both her own image and your father’s,

After God’s.

And with the knowledge and tools to navigate God’s green Earth.

She inherited super abilities

That help you cultivate your reality,

Guiding you toward the person you want to be

Through the love and discipline of a mother.

Pushing you closer to a woven understanding of yourself—

And, indirectly, a deeper understanding of her as well.

From sons around the world…

“We love you, Mom!”
