The Power of Words

A Poem

What are words?

Aren't they but letters

Joined together,

Some written thing,

Some drawings,

That ought to have

Some meaning?

But why do they

Cause some tears to fall?

And why do they

Seem to hurt us all?

More than wounds,

More than bruises,

More than anything

We've ever known?

Words,

Mere words.

Words that pierce us,

Words that change us,

Words that break,

Our souls in two.

They seem like nothing,

But why do I keep on longing,

To hear some words from you?

And when I do,

When you say

You love me, too,

I finally understand,

The power in our hands,

The wonders,

That only words can do.
