The Porch Swing

The Perfect Evening

You and me, baby

Sitting on the porch swing

Drinking tea, maybe

You are my King

And I am your Queen Bee

*

We will watch the world go by

While listening to the bobwhite quail

We will stay nice and dry

If the storms bring rain and hail

Cuddling, you and I

*

We will watch the sunset.

And as the stars come out

But we won’t go in yet.

We still have to hear the Whippoorwill shout.

So we will sit and smoke a cigarette.

*

Watching the lightning bugs fly a minuet

While listening to the frogs sing

And the crickets accompany in a duet

We will cuddle in our swing

Just as we did the day we met.

Come near, sit a spell, and listen to tales of old as I sit and rock by my fire. I'll serve you some cocoa and cookies as I tell you of the time long gone by when your Greats-greats once lived.
