the pirates lament

last of the pirates we!

By John CoxPublished 2 months ago Updated 2 months ago 1 min read
The Burning of the frigate Philadelphia in the harbor of Tripli, detail, by Thomas Moran, February 16, 1804, U.S. Naval Academy

heave ho, me hearties, sail hell's fiery sea

say farewell to mothers, lovers and lies,

God cursed us all, last of the pirates we!

...

step lively mates! spread canvas till thy see

sails billowing with wind in clear blue skies,

heave ho, me hearties, sail hell's fiery sea.

...

scurvy sailors all, we'll rob and rake thee

quake, mangy curs, when grappling hooks surprise,

God cursed us all, last of the pirates we!

...

the skull and crossbones, the last thing thy’ll see

bloody cutlass', pistols cock'd and primed,

heave ho, me hearties, sail hell's fiery sea.

...

'tween sea and world's edge with never a plea

our ships defy cannon's mighty broadsides,

God cursed us all, last of the pirates we!

...

till ships o' the line lure, outgunned times three

and we burn, watching our smoke fill the skies.

heave ho, me hearties, sail hell's fiery sea

God cursed us all, last of the pirates we!

I NEVER see pirate content anymore! I love this! Needs to be a pirate song in a movie! 🍿 Great work 👏👏

Oh I LOVE a good pirate's tale - this piece takes us right to the high seas, (and beyond) with wit and depth galore. Another masterful villanelle. Avast, Cap'n John!!

  • Lovely pirate flavour… not so lovely for them though!

That ship is going down with it's sails at full mast!

This is so much fun to read! I could hear a pirate's gruff voice - heave ho, me hearties! 🦜🏴‍☠️

This is so beautiful in a piratey way! I am a big fan of sea shanties and this fit right in with the best of them. Such a fun read!

Jc - As a former Navy guy, whose m.o.s was never aboard ship, I've always related to Old Salt 'C' (sea stories)..! Best, j.k.in.l.a.

You should have written this for ‘international talk like a pirate day’ I really like the way this rolls off the tongue. Now I wish to watch a pirate movie Arrrrgh

You are a true pirate, and your poem proves for I bet you have pirate's blood in you. Great job Captain Hook.

Well-wrought! The detail of the fire in Moran's painting is stellar. Had to look up the history behind all that too. Attempted to set up a puppet government in Tripoli to end a war with pirates, did we? There's nothing new under the sun, or on the sea, it seems.

  • It has always seemed that way to me, that they have cursed lives. Loved your poem!

A true pirate’s lament, gritty, musical, and full of fire. Loved every verse!
