The Past vs. Herself

by Mel

Overcoming;

that's the hard part.

Moving past what once was;

that's the part that hurts the most.

Having to look forward,

knowing all you've been through to get you to this point;

that's what feels like a dagger being shoved

into your gut.

Never have I imagined

that I'd be able to look past

what once was.

Never have I imagined

that I'd ever move past

the hurt that was thrown at me.

Never once have I thought

that I'd be able to push all that heartbreak

to the side;

telling myself that was no longer

an important aspect of my life.

Never once.

Being able to look ahead,

at the road ahead,

not knowing what laid ahead

while all those that once harmed me sat behind;

that's the dagger.

Being able to hold your head up high,

knowing that whatever hurt you in the past

can't ever come back;

that's the reason I'm still here today.
