The Pack
Make sure you're home before the howling

Ten dusky ochre eyes penetrate the gloom
Five craven bellies ache with ministered devotion
Twenty paws walking in a line that signals doom
--
Rows of yellowed teeth are bared, growls echo in the room
The sun went down too long ago, events are set in motion
Ten dusky ochre eyes penetrate the gloom
--
You tarried overlong within the desert and it's bloom
Now have come the hunters who snarl without emotion
With twenty paws walking in a line that signals doom
--
This matter is not personal, it doesn't matter whom
This covenant is primal and equally their notion
Ten dusky ochre eyes penetrate the gloom
--
Pity! As this moonless night spares darkness on your tomb
If the pain behind's a raindrop, you're about to feel an ocean
Twenty paws walking a line that signals doom
--
At first you fend them off, but behind their brethren loom
Your final thoughts are on the things that you have left unspoken
Ten dusky ochre eyes wink out within the gloom
And Twenty careworn paws erase a line that signaled doom
About the Creator
Thomas Speer
I'm a God-fearing tumbleweed of a man, a gentle husband, loving foster parent, screwed up past and amazingly ordained future serving the Lord and expressing his revelation in my writing. Don't expect the dry and sanctimonious, though.
