The old chair

Grandad loved it even though it had its day

The old Chair

The chair by the window is empty now,

No one sits on it,

It’s battered, dirty, and torn.

Grandad used to sit in it,

Brew in one hand,

Paper and pen on his knee.

He would pick his horses,

Saying, “This one’s a winner, you’ll see.”

He never had that lucky win,

He died in it, the chair I mean,

He looked peaceful, just sat there.

So Granny couldn’t get rid of his chair,

By the window, it still sits alone,

As if waiting for Grandad to come home.

So the dirty chair you see

As you pass by each day

Will be there till Granny has had her day.

Then the house will be vacant like the chair

free of the family who lived there,

For all their time on this Earth

Now house nore chair have any worth.

A poignant and evocative piece. The image of the empty chair, once filled with life and now a silent testament to love and loss, is deeply moving. The poem captures the bittersweet nature of memory and the enduring power of family bonds. It's a beautiful tribute to a beloved grandfather and a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life.
