The Nylon Veil

a poem

They only ever knew

striped clothes and bloated noses, tricks up sleeves and different poses.

When I asked of the circus

they mocked and jeered, saying “how ridiculous are your ideas?”

.

In my silence

I ran far enough away, to look back on it all and assuredly say;

No one can see the circus ‘till they refuse to perform

‘till they stand still long enough to view the charade in full form

.

Even spectators

are in stalls far from free, if you watch too long you owe the circus a fee.

Is there a way to escape

the great red tent, to refuse to perform or to pay for their rent?

.

It will take much courage

to break out of that mesh, and there are no guarantees of what will come next.

But since the great books

were correct about hell, surely they speak truth about heaven as well…

Wow! Brillant! “No one can see the circus ‘till they refuse to perform ‘till they stand still long enough to view the charade in full form” were such genius lines!

  • This was so poignant and extremely powerful! Loved your poem!

Very unique symbolism to convey a message... Loved it!

Loved the last three lines! There’s enough heaven and hell here on earth, especially in the 21st cent, to be tired of dreaming about the afterlife.
