The New Thing

A Consumer's Song

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

The anticipation is exquisite

So much is missing or broken or wrong

When the deliverer pays a visit

Everything will become bright and strong

So many cracks, fissures, voids need filling;

When the new thing arrives, all will be healed

Coveting gives it power most thrilling

By its arrival, we will be fulfilled

Given its cost, we may not muster rent

The nimbus of novelty will soon fade

It will break or get dirty or seem spent

The trip from new to old is no parade

While we wait for the new thing to arrive

Unwittingly, without it, we survive

Sonnet

    And this is why despite my social anxiety, I prefer to shop in person rather than buying stuff online. Loved your poem!

    I use to be like this with my DVD and book collection, ordering everything from overseas via Amazon.. so very much money gone back then, yet it satiated myself at the time (to a degree) until I needed the next fix! ;0) I enjoyed your poem D.J.
