The Mystery of Us

December 5,2024

By Cai FoxPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

I dreamt of you again last night,

And I never dream yet here you were,

A vivid memory or maybe a sign,

Filling the spaces, soul ties?

We were tangled, limbs and laughter,

Your touch a warmth I can’t forget.

I let it slip “baby”…….without thinking,

You paused, then said “no,” with quiet regret.

Not anger, but something deeper,

A hurt I couldn’t understand.

You stayed close though , your body steady,

Yet I pulled back, unsure where to land.

Was it pain I saw behind your eyes?

A silent tear you wouldn’t shed.

I slowed my touch, unsure, uncertain,

As questions echoed in my head.

What does this dream mean? Who are we?

Why do you haunt my waking memory?

With others, moving on was simple.

But you? You’re the puzzle I can’t complete.

You called me on your mother’s birthday….

A fragile voice, a breaking stone.

You laughed with me the way we used to,

But your sorrow clung to every tone.

“I just want to make someone proud,”

You said, as music softly played.

And all I wanted was to whisper,

“Baby, I’m proud. I’ve always stayed.”

But silence was the gift you needed,

A quiet space to simply be.

I studied you like sacred scripture,

Learning every line, your mystery.

I know you. I see you. I miss you still,

Though my guard stays up, my heart lays bare.

You told me you love me without the words,

And I told you too, in the way that I care.

Goddamnit, I miss you, this aching void,

This piece of me that feels undone.

You’re the question I’ll never answer,

The eternal shadow of a fleeting sun.
