The Monument

A tribute

By Claire MoranPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

The battles you’ve won

deserve monuments

golden

sky high

monuments

not words

that die in the air

wither

and change

but stone

towering

unyielding

beaming

beaming back

the years

oceans

of tears

beaming back

all you’ve done

beaming back

every moment

spent

waiting

tediously

waiting

for your body

to assemble

its might

and fight

no more

no more needles

septic

weevils

worming

their way

into places

undone

The acrid

taste

of defeat

as cells collide

cellular homicide

defeat

defeat

Behind doors

in hospital hallways

cut

prodded

again and again

rebuilt and remade

again and again

No more

You rose

stronger than

before

you rose

Until here

here

in the realm

of moon

and stars

cathedrals

shadows taller

than mountains

You’re here

breath catching in throat

here

slowing steps

slowing time

stone upon stone

looking skywards

rising

defying

blood

sweat

tears

unified

stone upon stone

stronger than steel

this is force

this is power

combined

In midnight air

we’ll stand

shoulder to shoulder

you’re here

staring

voices low

awe-struck

staring

At the monument waving

eyes bright

at the sun

together they’ll see

You are free

you are free

inspirational
