a gasp

like first of morning

breath

as sun breaking through early spring skies

almost blinding,

almost too much

almost

sense of renewal, freshness and the hope

not just hope for what lies ahead, but of

that which has gone before is unforgotten

not completely, good, bad, happy or sad

the full spectrum of experience

hope that with the onward March of spring

there is a chance

for renewal of self

while paying due respect and consideration

to past failings and past events, equally

"Life is divided into three terms -

that which was,

which is,

and which will be

Let us learn from the past

to profit by the present,

and from the present,

to live better in the future."

Wordsworth said it beautifully.

as much as the March towards Spring

is a chance

for our earthly realm, our wonderous world

to renew itself

bring forth new growth

so too is it a chance for us to do the same

to take stock, own up and look ahead

tho' the need for a new start does not need

a start date -

as March becomes April

now is as good a time as any,

to draw

yes, draw a line under what has gone before

and look

look

with confidence through trepidation

ahead

to what lies before you,

so

inhale

exhale

"Those who cannot remember the past

are condemned to repeat it

without a sense of ironic futility"

Errol Morris

This was so beautifully written!! Makes me want to look optimistically out to this beautiful spring, even with my allergies 😭 Amazing work! March Comes In Like A Lion is also a great, hard-hitting anime about grief that I always recommend whenever I see the saying literally anywhere, so I have to throw that in here too 😂♥️ It’s one of my favorites!

  • Beautifully & sagely said, Paul.

Wonderful work, Paul! I was really drawn in toward the start with the "as sun breaking through early spring skies, almost blinding, almost too much, almost" A beautiful and wistful essence of spring!

  • Thanks for these excellent words and including that quote and beautiful image

  • Oooo, that quote is by Errol Morris? I only know the version of George Santayana. Loved your poem! 🍩🥐

Who is this really? I know Paul and Paul would never, ever quote Wordsworth! I mean, think about it! He’d have to read him to quote him. The Paul I know told me, and I quote, Wordsworth can go hide in a hole (I do realize he’s dead…oh the irony.) Don’t make me report you to Vocal!

  • I like the line "full spectrum of experience." That's what March is!
