the lover gone amiss— a poem by danika
the one that got away

it wasn’t goodbye
when i slid out from under your arms
engulfed in your grey hoodie
that smelled just like you,
all warm and love
it wasn’t goodbye
when i leaned close enough to you
that i could feel
the heat that emanated off your skin,
and pressed my chapped lips against your forehead
it wasn’t goodbye
when your hands found their place
on my waist
a drowsy smile on your lips
before pulling me towards you
and burying your face in the crook of my neck
when you asked me
to stay
five more minutes
you mumbled,
voice hoarse and sending sparks
down my spine
it wasn’t goodbye when you pressed me
against the cold of the door
it wasn’t goodbye when your lips
descended onto mine
it wasn’t goodbye when i left,
it wasn’t goodbye
it wasn’t goodbye
it wasn’t goodbye—i didn’t know
it was goodbye.
