The Lights of Fireflies

The Glow Within the Darkness

By Dil KumarPublished 10 months ago 3 min read

The Lights of Fireflies
Whenever I feel nobody is there for me,
I have a wind that caresses me.
Whenever I feel silence swallowing me,
I have prayer flags that speak to me.
I have dreams that others cannot see,
but they always stroke and talk to me.
I have a compass, and its needle points to my destination
Behind the hills that I couldn't see.
"What am I doing on this earth,
Walking alone uphill and downhill?
Do I have inside me a mind that thinks, a heart that feels,
Or is my destiny nil?"
Often, my own self wonders, my calm spirit thunders,
And my frozen soul shudders,
And I can hear my dreams,
Though I can't see them even miles yonder.

Whenever I'm walking alone,
Peace is always there rambling with me.
Whenever I'm standing alone,
Ambition is always there counting on me.
I keep walking to remote and unvisited places,
To find out what's new there,
I keep talking to the stranger faces,
To find in their words the cheers and truths so rare.
I find myself alone, sitting quietly at the corners
Far from the noise and crowd,
I'm away from the island inhabited by wild people,
With barbaric yawps, for which I'm genuinely proud.
I find myself alone, treading through the knackering storms,
And talking to my own shadow,
For I know when the rain and storm stops pouring and roaring,
The sky glitters with a beautiful rainbow.

Whenever I'm tired on my journey,
I stop for a minute and stare at the darkening sky,
Then I scramble to find some secluded shade
To take rest and silently cry.
There I never find myself alone,
As I find myself watched by a constellation of stars.
Embarrassed and blushed, I try to cover my tainted face,
Filled with scars and spots, blotted with blemishes and scars.
But the throng of fireflies swarm by,
And their light tells me not to cry,
Not to hide the blotches I have gotten,
And never ever to feel disheartened and shy.
So I get up and stand strong on my feet
And follow the light of fireflies that I can see.
And tell myself, "Let people see me abnormal,
I should believe in myself to be extraordinary."

No friends? Don't feel lonely, because when you look around you, you're not really alone. If you're not making progress in your dreams, don't panic, because believe in the seasons that it takes a good amount of time to achieve good things in your life. The darkness is the same for all individuals who are bypassing you, who are talking to you, who are dancing or singing in front of you; just what differentiates you from them is a matter of time. You may see your friends doing better than you, or you may see them falling behind you. But during those moments, don't feel yourself inferior to those people who are doing better than you, and don't feel yourself superior to those friends who have less progress than you. Because one way or another, circumstances will balance who is to advance and who is to run slow in his own progress. The night is the same for all, with fleeting dark hours between sunset and sunshine. But see, what is it for fireflies? For them, it's their awaited opportunity to glow. It's their long-awaited moment to fly free. They know it's coming, so they wait for night to fall and never appear during the day to risk their lives. But when their time comes, they make the best use of it. That's what I mean—see something more than just an ordinary glow in the light of fireflies. For them, it's their awaited opportunity to glow.
