See them twinkle in the twilight

feel their warmth at the dawn

just a blink and it's over

one more moment and it's gone

children wonder in amazement

eyes aglow with joyful magic

hearts are full with company

so joyous and so tragic

that it can not be for eternity

this distraction is it helpful

or just another coping strategy

As I spend another year hoping

this with be the christmas without end

Missing people around the table

missing something I cannot see

As I look up all around me

The lights flicker and one more burns out

Is this real or is it in us?

The Christmas spirit lights no more
