The Last Obstacle

The Final Colors

By Elizabeth PetitPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

A collection of colors in the distance

All organized and packed together

Bright and dark striking a balance

Each an individual; not so separate either.

Suddenly, a scattering of hues

Brings a change in our perspectives.

At this point, there’s only one to choose.

We both know our ultimate objectives.

One by one, they’re moved around

Sometimes slowly and others with force,

But they know where they are bound

As long as they stay on their course.

Waiting in the growing silence,

My heartbeat continues to rise.

Ignoring stares from the audience,

I try to focus on the final prize.

Only one last obstacle to overcome.

But, how to triumph over this pearly daffodil?

Breathe deeply, eyes focused, smooth rhythm.

Here’s where I can truly show my skill.

As the ivory sphere looms ahead,

I slowly make my deliberate motion.

The collision causes an expected spread,

And the target travels towards its location.

Watching the clouds and golden sunrise

Skimming across the emerald pasture

I tell myself not to over analyze

But just to wait and embrace the future.

Mere inches away from its destination

Will the shiny orb have enough momentum?

Will there be disappointment or celebration?

The moment of truth has finally come.

As if to add a second of uncertainty,

It slightly pauses for just an instant

Then, topples its way to safety

Solidifying my accomplishment.

My opponent never expected to fail

But his stunned face says it all.

Oh yes, he was defeated by a female

With a dramatic drop of the 9-ball.
