The Last Light in My Heart

From self-blame to self-love

By Rohitha LankaPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

"The last light in my heart".

Sometimes... the worst enemy is no one else

But it is ourselves... the day we turn our backs on ourselves

The girl who can never have enough

"Stupid!"

"Nothing!"

"My life would be better without you!"

The sound of has been in the head of "Kie" for the past twenty years

Kie grew up in a home where there were only nagging words, no smiles, no hugs, only expectations and crushing pressure

Every time Kie tries to do something, she always fails in her mother's eyes, no matter how hard she tries

As the days pass, Kie becomes an adult with a position, a job, and a salary more than what Ma expected, but... her heart is empty

Like a girl who is still crying in a dark corner, waiting for someone to tell her that she is doing well...

But no one

"Maybe...I shouldn't have been born on this earth in the first place,"

Kie thinks like that every time she fails, even a little bit, she always blames herself

The darkest day...

One day, Kie encountered a big mistake at work

It's not her fault alone, but she bears it's all with the ingrained belief that "it's all my fault."

She walked back to the room, exhausted with tears running down her face unconsciously

She looked out the window and saw the city lights twinkling

But for her, it is so far away that people who do not have the right to be happy in this world

She picked up the paper and wrote a letter.

"Sorry to be born."

"Sorry for being me."

"Sorry to disappoint everyone."

Shaking her hand, she put down the pen before she slowly climbed up to the fifteenth-floor high balcony...

But before she could step over the edge... a voice rang out in her mind

"What about the sky? Doesn't Kie deserve a chance of his own?"

Voices that change lives

The sound was not loud, but strangely clear

It made the sky freeze...and I sat and cried almost on the balcony

"Enough...enough..." she whispered to herself

For the first time in her life. She stopped blaming herself

For the first time in her life, she admits that...she's hurt and it's not all her fault

That day Kie did not jump from the balcony

She got up, took the letter of apology, threw it in the trash, and wrote a new message

"Thank you for being patient until today."

"Thank You for Being Alive"

"Thank yourself."

It was a small beginning that no one saw

But for Kie, it is about crossing the deepest chasm within oneself

The living sky

After that day. Kie started doing little things to take care of himself

She learns not to let other people's words define her own worth

She started drawing, writing diaries and, planting plants in small rooms her

She started telling herself

"It's wrong...but it's worth loving yourself."

"Tired...but don't give up"

The sky is not perfect

She still cries some nights and hurts some days

But today she chooses to live for "herself" and not to please anyone anymore

And one morning as the sun shines through the thin white curtain

For the first time in the sky, I smiled warmly at myself

"I'm proud of myself."

Life is never easy, and it may not always be as we hope

But as long as we still have ourselves here, we still love ourselves

This world... still has light for us

Forgive yourself.- know your worth - and live for yourself
