The Last Call of Summer

A poem

The approaching air covers the earth in a blanket,

a blanket cool and crisp over the once humid summer air

No more swimming

no fingers and toes digging in hot sand

 or lounging under beach umbrellas

with the hot sun beating down

no more eighty plus degrees

The evening rays of light become less and less

as the night approaches closer and the sun sets sooner each day.

There's a chill in the air, subtle yet noticeable

A nudging reminder

Gone soon will be the nights of lounging on the porch and looking up at the summer sky

when no sweater is needed on those cool summer nights

When even the slightest breeze doesn't give us a chill

but instead relief

Gone soon, for now, will be summer as it makes its final call
