The Key

A poem

Empty smiles,

Hollow laughter.

Fearful eyes.

Cautious words.

Always looking

Over our shoulders.

Walking quickly,

Keys held tight.

Amazon cart full,

Of ‘cute’ self-defense kits.

Heaven forbid we ever be,

Anything other than ‘cute’.

Like strong, intelligent.

Creative, leaders.

Independent, competent.

Anything other than wife,

Daughter, property.

Covered drinks,

Hidden hearts.

Polite facade,

Pointless words.

Void platitudes.

Circling round and round.

A castle wall, impenetrable,

To most who would approach.

Proper pronouns,

Respect and safety.

Permission to touch,

Space and trust.

Unexpected negotiators.

A welcome alternative

To the usual battering ram.

A warm embrace,

Something true.

Walls crumble,

Circle breaks.

A new path forward emerges.

A horizon full of warmth of possibilities.
