The Joy of Breath

A Sunlit Shelf

By Amanda WalkerPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

Under the water, the world is quiet. The everyday so far away. Holding my breath, waiting for death. To breathe would ruin the moment. Alone in the depths, one with myself. To see my pain on a sunlit shelf.

Under the waves, the surface is fractured. The things I hear so far away. I am able to start unfolding my heart. To exhale and savour the moment. Each bubble’s journey, a burden to carry. They quiver and break, so solitary.

Above the sea, surrounded by life. The joy of breath, so dear to me. This golden life, this unrestrained glee. To submit to drowning in the darkest moment. Would undermine a soul that’s strong. When troubles compose the sweetest song.

I hope that my writing conveys the loneliness and heartbreak that every one of us experiences, and the joy and elation that comes from living through it.
