The Italian Goodbye

The Art of Saying Goodbye

It’s time to go

Getting late

Dad sighs

Stands up

Awkwardly holds his coat

The hugging and kissing

Continue as mom works the room

Dad jingles the keys

To no avail

Coat on to send a warning signal

Twenty minutes later

Coat off

Another futile sigh

As he steps closer to the door

He catches moms eye

She cringes

Brushing him off

The conversations must be had

Goodbyes complete

They walk down the sidewalk

Get in the car

When mom realizes

She forgot the cake

Dad starts the car

Pretending he didn’t hear

Drives off quickly

To mom’s protests

———

We always joked in my family that the long Italian goodbye took about an hour, as you couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to all of your relatives. It was always fun to watch my dad, try to move us along.
