The ‘I’ in I Thee Wed

Is marriage about selfishness or selflessness?

By Skyler SaundersPublished 7 years ago 1 min read
The bond of egoism.

It’s not a sacrifice to wed,

Unless you detest your mate,

And you have already said

That they’re the one you hate.

Love and selflessness together cannot compute.

The former is strength and the latter is for the weak at mind.

The argument is not even moot.

Anyone who tries to pair them, frustration is what they’ll find.

Unselfishness is a defect and a flaw.

When there’s nothing left in the way of flesh

That’s when upon the bones the selfless will begin to gnaw.

Putting self last is making yourself meat that is fresh.

The couple who knows that the self is chief

Will have happiness, not just relief.
