The House

For Spooky Season

The House
Photo by Hans-Peter Traunig on Unsplash

In the house were fifteen stairs,

Walkways for the dead,

In each hall were twenty chairs,

A ghost in every bed.

~

Madness lived within the walls,

Silence its only friend,

Horrors hung along the halls,

Wickedness lurked at their end.

~

The paths converge, the halls divide,

The house begins to crack,

And none can find a place to hide,

As all the world turns black.

~

The moon shines on the scattered ruins,

The dead souls now have fled,

And all that’s left of the once-proud rooms

Is the fading stench of the dead.

~

And the ravens gather to feast

Filling their stomachs with flesh

From the lonely corpse of the beast,

This house that finally may rest.

~

But now on the hill you see

A specter of ill will

A horror that never could be,

The house is standing still.
