Take Joy, Connection, and Calm in Winter's Glow from Holiday Time

Holiday time is that season of joy and nostalgia and reflection in the final throes of the year. For most, it is a time of the year when all the steps of the neighborhood light up, families sit across tables full of food, and laughter abounds in rooms full of all styles of festive cheer. But under all that partying, it all tries to be a chance to reconnect and reflect, savoring small pockets of peace. Okay, well, let's dive into the heart of the season and how to do it all in big and little ways.

1. Cozy Feeling of Tradition . Traditions are a good source of holidays since they can connect people to their roots and their family. Whether lighting candles at Hanukkah, baking special cookies, or decorating a tree, all those rituals bring people together in a unique way. Most of the time, the ritual makes every family's holiday season feel different and special to them as part of continuity from generation to generation.

Tradition does not have to always be the same year in and year out; it is perfectly okay if it grows along with you. A little twist, such as introducing a new holiday dish or having a movie night where everyone watches his favorite seasonal film, keeps things interesting and puts a little life into old traditions. Being open to old and new traditions reminds us of the fact that, all in all, the holidays are a time for people and moments that matter most.

2. Celebratory Moments and Cozy Sessions . The joy of the season sometimes lies in gatherings—those warm, cozy get-togethers with family, friends, and even neighbors. Such times with one another bring us out from our loneliness and take some special time to enjoy each other's company in ways we probably do not during the rest of the year. During such times, we find the road to laughter and connection—the walk of the many huddles of old friends reembracing over a cup of hot cocoa, or of family gathered together to make holiday treats together.

Throughout these times, food becomes a hero in most homes. The scent of gingerbread cookies baking in the oven speaks to hearty fare at family feasts or even a simple cup of eggnog or hot chocolate to bring a family closer. In fact, sharing a meal is merely an old tradition, something that brings people together around the holiday, only with a touch of special magic.

You may not be able to gather in large groups, but the spirit of coming together can definitely be celebrated. Virtual gatherings, sending holiday cards, and even brief phone calls to loved ones all help keep the connections alive and strong. In fact, these little, less-talked-about moments can be even more meaningful, allowing us to say thanks for one another in simple yet heartfelt ways.

3. Finding Beauty in Winter's Quiet . In character, holidays are a time of festivity and fun, and yet they have this funny stillness that comes with it—all the more so when winter begins to roll in. Falling snow was cool, silent, and crisp; so too was the early sunset, giving the impression that there was now some sort of invitation to calm that existed nowhere else at any other time of the year. It has become a season to reflect and unwind for most people.

Perhaps the biggest benefit is that it gives us the chance to halt for a while to appreciate the beauty of winter. Taking a walk when it's falling or just peering out through a window as it falls grounds us—by carrying along with it the natural quietness that beckons reminding us to slow it down and take a break from the rush and panic usually brought along with the holiday season. It is one of those quiet days when the atmosphere calls for grateful practices, reflection over the year gone by, or, for that matter, taking some deep breaths and really appreciating the moment.

4. The magic of nostalgia . Holidays always stir up a mighty wave of nostalgia. From classics on the radio to that favorite holiday movie, there's a way familiar sounds and sights catapult us back through the ages. Nostalgia may be bittersweet, but it reminds one of holidays long past and loved ones no longer around, perhaps even gone to share the season with, yet comforting in reminding the joy and warmth the season has always brought.

Nostalgia does something very special for us—it places feelings of connection not only with the past but with those around us. Telling stories, going through a collection of old photos, or viewing a film you have seen a million times makes a connection and reminds you that you're part of something bigger than yourself.

5. Living Generosity and Giving . Another beautiful thing about the holiday season is the graciousness of spirit this season inspires. Whether it is a gift or volunteer work, simply showing a little bit of kindness to another person—it's a big part of giving back. There is something beautiful about knowing that your smallest action can brighten up another's day.

For some, it means giving to the local charity or providing for a family in need. Others will find a way to serve by giving of their time: volunteering at a shelter or extending a helping hand to the neighbor. This little act of kindness—a compliment given to a stranger or a friendly note left for someone—can make an enormous difference. At the end of it all, the holiday season is about giving people joy.

6. Conclusion. Closing the Year in Gratitude . There's even Thanksgiving in the holiday season. It's a time for reflection—to look at what the year's been—be it disappointment at what didn't come about, celebration of what it was, and thanksgiving for the people and experiences that have touched our lives. Keeping one's attention on gratitude can find peace and contentment in even the most difficult of years.

A simple way to practice gratitude is to write a few things you’re thankful for at the end of each day. It could be as simple as enjoying a warm drink on a cold day or as big as reconnecting with a loved one. Gratitude helps us see the beauty in small moments, deepening our appreciation for all that the season offers.
