The Harmony Within: A Dance of Reason and Passion
Finding Balance in the Inner Battle Between Mind and Heart
Your soul is often a battlefield, where reason and judgment clash with passion and desire. If only I could be the peacemaker within you, transforming this inner conflict into harmony and unity. But how can I achieve this unless you, too, become peacemakers, embracing all parts of yourself?
Consider this: reason and passion are like the rudder and sails of a ship that is your soul. If either the sails or the rudder are damaged, you can only drift aimlessly, or remain stranded in the middle of the sea. Reason alone, without passion, becomes a restrictive force like a ship stuck in the harbor. Passion, without the guidance of reason, is like a fire that consumes itself, leaving only ashes in its wake. Therefore, let your soul lift reason to the intensity of passion, so that it may sing with life. Let your passion be guided by reason, so it may be reborn daily, like the phoenix rising from its own ashes.
Think of your judgment and your desires as two honored guests in your home. Would you favor one over the other? If you were to do so, you would risk losing the affection and trust of both. Similarly, embrace both your rational mind and your passionate spirit, for each has its own wisdom and beauty.
When you sit under the cool shade of white poplars, feeling the tranquility of distant fields and meadows, let your heart whisper, “God rests in reason.” And when the storm arrives, when the wind roars through the forest, and thunder and lightning reveal the sky’s fierce power, let your heart exclaim, “God moves in passion.” For you, too, are both a breath of God’s stillness and a leaf stirred by God’s storm. You should rest in reason and move in passion, for this is the balance of life.
