The Group Chat Curse

The plan is always made. The plan is never kept. The group chat always wins.

By Olayinka AtiyeyePublished 10 months ago 1 min read

“Guys, we have to meet up this time. No excuses.”

I sent the message with my whole chest,

knowing full well what was about to happen.

The chat lit up instantly—

“Yesss! It’s been too long!”

“We NEED this!”

“I’m free whenever!” (A bold-faced lie.)

We started throwing out dates.

Too early. Too late.

Someone had work. Someone had a wedding.

Someone had a mystery obligation that could not be explained.

But after much negotiation, a date was set.

It was real. It was happening.

Until… it wasn’t.

As the day crept closer, the excuses started rolling in:

“Ugh, my boss just scheduled me last minute.”

“Forgot I had a thing that day, my bad.”

“I’m broke, guys. Like, aggressively broke.”

And the one that truly sealed our fate—

“We can always reschedule, right?”

One by one, we all backed out.

Even me. (Especially me.)

Not because I didn’t want to go—

but because staying in my pajamas sounded very appealing.

Two days later, someone dropped a meme in the chat.

No one mentioned the failed hangout.

We all just… moved on.

And like clockwork, a few weeks later—

“We have to meet up soon. No excuses.”

And the cycle began again.

Moral of the story?

The plan is always made.

The plan is never kept.

The group chat wins every time.

We all mean well. We really do. But life happens, plans unravel, and somehow, the group chat remains undefeated. If you’ve ever found yourself hyping up a hangout only to mysteriously vanish when the day arrives… congratulations. You’re just as guilty as the rest of us.

Maybe one day, we’ll actually meet up.

Maybe.
