the glory of the night

a finding of oneself

As I looked into the sky one night,

A star winked down at me.

What are you doing up so late;

What are you trying to see?

“I'm here looking for answers,”

I spoke softly to the night.

“I'm hoping to see the universe

before I see the light.”

My daughter, I have seen so much -

Gods rise and titans fall.

But the one thing that is constant

Is that you always hear the call.

I gazed up at the majesty

Spread before me in the sky,

Wondering aloud about this call,

To which came the gentle reply,

My daughter, those like you will come

Each night to me and pray

Before the expanse of the abyss

Asking to be not swept away

But to be swept up into the sky

To be part of something more;

Each dawn, each generation

Shaken deeply to the core.

I went away to ruminate

Or perhaps to get some sleep,

But the galaxies still called to me

And prayed my soul to keep.

I never saw that star again

Or knew just whom it was

But that night the sky spoke to me,

I learned truly whom I was.
