The Fog
and the Candle

The fog weighs heavy
upon the earth
Obscured mystery
Some struggle to see the road
Some blindly follow someone else
Some won't even chance it
Surprised snooze buttons deployed
Roads become ghost towns
Reticent birds hush their songs
Distant sounds startle
A damp and quiet pall
Thinly threaded with dread
Comes now the sun
Scorching the wet fog
Steamy tendrils rise
like white flags of defeat
Disappearing in the sun's gaze
Light streaming through the trees
Into the damp shadows
Flowers arch upwards as a
butterfly flutters into the open
Birdsong crowds the crystal sky
as if it's a Top Song competition
Sometimes He waters the earth
without rain but with
A ground-quenching fog
And some get lost
Their road obscured
Fear settles thick
But just wait a little while
Until the Son comes
Let His fire incinerate the barrier
So that the road is clear
And Faith melts off the fear.
Amen.

“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” 1 Kings 18:38-39 NKJV
