The Flood

Poem

By Mallika DharPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

We had a beautiful, tiny river

Elegant music rose from her dancing water-

A pair of birds used to play under the canopy of trees

Theirs moves and turns were amazing,

As if designed by a great artist.

That was such a beautiful world

So lovely, so full of love!

Leaving all those behind, we floated away

Towards the indifferent sky,

Rain-clouds were far more indifferent,

They left the thirsty land behind

Flew away towards the green hills.

Above the gray dunes in the land of drought

The red moon hanged –

Cruel worship was prepared for the midnight,

In the evening there was a whirlwind of dust

Air was playing a rough tune on the sand.

Didn't you know all those things?

Didn’t you know about our sleepless nights in the woods,

About our trembling hearts under a strange star-

Did you ever understand?

Do you understand now?

Now when all are being taken away by the muddy currents-

All our fields are being washed up ?

Flood is taking away all of our hopes,

All things we loved, worked for -

The work of the great painters,

Work of the ancient grandmothers-

All the things we held dear.

Yet the flood will end one day-

Those whom you have chosen to board on your boat,

Which shore will you reach with all of them?

O sailor, O invincible sailor?
