The First Time I Felt Love

I jumped as I felt you land on me.

You wiggled up and I felt panicked.

Until I saw you.

You looked like me,

Or maybe I saw myself in you.

It was instant.

It was the first time I felt unconditional love.

Real love.

I was shocked.

I was crying,

I was overwhelmed with happiness.

I kept saying out loud,

I have a baby!

Everyone thought well yes of course you do.

Why else would I be in the labour ward.

Yet I still couldn’t believe you were real,

That I was actually holding you.

I stared at the size difference of our hands.

I stared at the way you clung onto me.

From the moment I saw you,

I knew,

That I had never really experienced love before.

I knew,

That I would do anything to protect you.

I knew,

That you were now my reason.

My reason to be better.

To do better.

It’s because of you little one,

That I know what true love is.

It’s because of you.
