I never thought I'd be at this stage

Yearning for chapters that never began

And yet I turn the page

Lying here at the end of my age

I trace the mistakes written in youth

I never thought I'd be at this stage

Once a young man, brimming with rage

Shame now falls and smudges the ink

And yet I turn the page

Footnotes of love I'll never assuage

Haunt my dreams both day and night

I never thought I'd be at this stage

The dark lines of battles I chose to wage

Left me alone in this final chapter

And yet I turn the page

Now the back cover is in front of me

And a broken man is all I see

I never thought I'd be at this stage

And yet I turn the page
