water pouring, dripping, splashing,

feeding into soil.

nearly every leaf is wilting,

brown & yellow, except

the new leaves sprouting on

the fiddle leaf fig my granny gave me.

“i told you it wouldn’t be no time!”

“it’s good to hear your voice.”

“sony said you got a dog,

what’s wrong?”

as if i’d ever tell,

as if i knew myself,

as if at night she wasn’t

going to pray for me regardless.

“do you remember hugo?”

“the german shepard dog?

“who stayed with us on cool papa bell?”

“where you’d help me make

macaroni & cheese, singing

‘shake, shake it baby!?’”

as if i could

forget.

how’d i almost miss

the new leaves sprouting on

the fiddle leaf fig my granny gave me.
