The Fallen King

A peom of loss

By Tressa RosePublished 2 years ago 2 min read

Battle after battle
He fought time and time again
Taking souls as he pleased
Ruling proudly from his demesne.

He held no love in his heart
He relished causing pain
Until he came upon the beautiful Anaisa
For his deeds he then felt shame.

Still somehow she came to love him
And birthed for him a little girl
In that moment he called for his soldiers
To find the brightest of pearls.

A gift fit for one of such precious innocence
His heart for the first time did beat
His wife and kingdom in awe
As this was no small feat.

The soldiers succeeded
And brought to his court
The most marvelous of pearls
Their journey they were proud to report.

On his daughter's 18th birthday
He gave her the special gift
She hugged him and cried deeply
His heart again did shift.

His little pearl he always called her
And softer his heart did grow
Little did he know this would eventually be his downfall
For lurking in the shadows was a worthy foe.

One night while in their beds they did sleep
Came in this villainous shadow
And with a quick and sudden strike
He landed a vicious blow.

The King awoke to screams from his wife
He rushed quickly to her aid
There he saw his little pearl
Lifeless where she laid.

He recognized this style of death
It was from a man he once had tortured
Killing his wife and sparing the man's life
To live in misery alone he was ordered.

He knew this was payback
For all his time of wrong deeds
This was finally the karma
of planting all those evil seeds.

The one, the great, the king of death
Tears of tar flowed from his eyes
For after all the years
He realized he was his own demise.
The extended version for the contest I entered. This was 200 words over, but I enjoyed it so decided to publish separately. © Jan 22 time • love • loss

Until one night his love was murdered in her sleep
And for the first time he felt defeat.

The one, the great, the king of death
Tears of tar flowed from his eyes
