The Eve of Knowing

alt title: Lessons Never Learned

By CaitlinPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Two came faster than one

Three came faster still

I want time to move slower

But I know I never will..

Four will come quickly

And five even more

Before I know it ten

Will be knocking at our door.

And then you'll be twenty

And ever older still

One day you'll want time to move slower

And you'll know it never will.

Right now three is just knocking

And five is a long way off

And it is hard to imagine you as teen

Who brushes this off with a scoff.

It is strange to think that one day

You'll be here just like me

Staring down at middle age

As quickly as can be.

There is something beautifully haunting

About the growing and the loss

I know you won't believe me

But it is certainly worth the cost.

I know you won't believe me

That time will pass you by

It is something every parent does

So I'm gonna have to try.

Relish all the moments

Enjoy the summers that last for several years

You certainly won't believe me

But it is worth all the tears.

I see the women whispering

At the very public pool

How they really really miss

When their children were little and in school.

I hear what they are saying

And I feel a touch of furry

I know that they are right you see

But I'm in such a hurry.
