The Dungeon of a Shopaholic
This poem is about my shopping addiction. It also mentions hoarding and mental illness.

Enter into the cluttered dungeon.
The dungeon of the shopaholic.
It’s a dark place,
With lovely things.
Small treasures from around the world,
All covered in dust.
You know that feeling when you get something new?
The endorphins of happiness that come over you like a drug?
Imagine that as your only happiness.
As the only light at the end of the tunnel.
It's embarrassing and shameful.
It's like admitting you are miserable,
When everyone else thinks you are happy.
Sometimes it's better to go along with the lie.
No one has to see these demons,
With their money hungry hands clawing
At your heart and pocketbook.
It's not about bragging for me.
I am a thrift shopper.
I want nice things,
But I want to save money.
I get a buzz from finding deals,
And saving money.
How ironic!
I am a consumer so I must consume.
Everything is on sale.
I can't resist.
And so the spiraling continues,
Until you are more in the hole than on top of the hole.
You are now buried underground,
And all this dusty stuff is falling on top of you.
You are drowning in 20 pairs of jeans, jewelry you forgot you had, and lavender bath salts.
Everything just smells like lavender,
But for once that is a bad thing!
You are drowning in your own belongings.
Did you really need all this stuff?
Most of it is unused.
I make donations to charity.
Why didn't I just give them money?
Instead of collecting items and then donating them?
Wouldn't that make more sense?
But none of this makes any sense!
Using outward behaviors,
Too control inward feelings.
But how do I stop?
I hit rock bottom.
I get to a point,
I am miserable.
But this cycle has gone on for years.
I was just too embarrassed to admit it
Once you let the truth out,
Only good can come.
