The Dirt on the Bottom of My Shoe
Free form
Yesterday, I took a walk through
A muddy cornfield that wraps
Around my house in the country.
I walked the same way that
I always have, admiring nature
And the song of the forest
From the cornfield's edge.
Today, though, I noticed that
I wore the same shoes from yesterday.
The mud had dried along the edges,
Caked on by the pound.
Every time I tap my feet on the floor,
Little flecks of dirt
Detach themselves and fly
From my footwear to freedom,
Tiny pieces of rock that have been
Broken down over millions of years
That contain entire ecosystems of
Microscopic life, little crumbs of soil
That make up the entire
Earth that sustains all living things…
Or evidence that connects this moment
To the history of yesterday's activities!
As I leave the room, I glance
At the trail of soil that
Follows me and wonder briefly
If I should clean it up.
But then again, the janitor
Will come by to wash the floors.
After all, it was probably just dirt
From the bottom of some kid's shoe.

Oh I think this was the first time I read such a very creative poem. There is a lot of hidden profound meanings in this poem!
Oooo, this certainly was very profound! Loved your poem!
That was a fun and thought-provoking read, and some of it resonates with how I feel when I have been in the garden!
