The Dire Dullahan
A Headless Horseman's Abecedarian

Advancing through the dark, the Dullahan
Brings with him an augury of grim death
Cautious as we may be to avoid him
Doomed is the one whose name this rider speaks
Eire is his home, but he roams the world
Forces fierce and fearful accompany him
Ghastly is his whip, made from a long spine
His quest for the marked soul is relentless
If he finds you, pray that you have some gold
Just that ductile metal will ward him off
Keen and bloodthirsty is his bitter blade
Long has he harvested horrified heads
Morbid and monstrous as this creature is
Never doubt that he represents one truth:
Over death, mortals have no dominion
Pursue us it will, obstinate and firm
Quiver and tremble though our soft hearts might
Rebellion against the order of things
Seems bold and courageous, but it’s futile
To the Dullahan, our pleas for mercy
Urge him more swiftly to lop off our heads!
Vivisecting a coward warms his heart
Without a head, he thinks little of us
Xylomancers read his approach in wood
You need only listen for his mount’s hooves
Zooming to harvest your Halloween head!

Another fantastic installment in your series of spooky season abecedarians! The headless horseman is such a curious figure
spooky it is, well written
Such an ominous feel to this trail of words. And thank you for introducing me to new word. Vivisecting is an intellectual way to describe what’s coming to the potential victims.
Very spooky, pal. Some good alliteration here and there and everywhere.
"Without a head, he thinks little of us" That lines made me laugh so much hahahahaha. Loved your poem!
