The Devil's Promise

A villanelle poem.

I thought you were my lonely dream.

Before I saw your rot, whispering with velvet lies-

Cast aside truth’s cruel words, for a devil’s scheme.

.

I came upon you innocent, a lamb of hopes and gleam,

Bewitched with love-soaked buttered cries-

I thought you were my lonely dream.

.

Your thoughts and mine coalesce into shallow stream.

Drifting on in broken compromise,

Cast aside truth’s cruel words, for a devil’s scheme.

.

The world can be so cruel and mean,

Yet you! A shiny and true knight in pure disguise,

I thought you were my lonely dream.

.

Bridges burned to log and beam,

The feasting left to flies,

Cast aside truth’s cruel words, for a devil’s scheme.

.

Articulated deceit in our bloodstream,

Too late to turn, I sigh.

I thought you were my lonely dream.

Cast aside truth’s cruel words, for a devil’s scheme.
