The Destructiveness Of Humanity
No empathy for divergence

Humanity and it’s cruelty,
For anybody daring to be divergent,
Or even different through no choice of their own,
Causing that one to attempt change, the crueler the more urgent.
***
People hide their deformities,
And if severe enough they hide from it all,
Already controlled by pain, humanity makes them feel worse,
Convincing them we are normal, while they’re the oddball.
***
If the pain is internal,
Humanity has been the cause of that fake smile,
Emotions are crippled,
But the wounded hide it in style.
***
Humanity is best when imperfect,
Although it’s not accepting of that in others,
Closing its eyes to its own fragility,
Refusing to acknowledge humanity is made up of mothers and brothers.
***
Hideousness is trampled on, bashed to death,
A serious scar, a horrid burn mark,
No empathy is felt, just disgust,
Ugly seen in a squinty eye or an acne pockmark.
***
Humanity needs to look inside at its own imperfections,
Before it takes hold and hastily judges,
The neighbour next door is fighting hard,
The school child is suffering due to someone holding grudges.
***
That scar someone wears,
Should be seen as a badge of glory,
The strength it took to survive,
Yet humanity will discard them without knowing their story.
***
Sit through the theatre production ‘Phantom of the Opera’,
It brings home the horror humanity instils,
The damage it does is immeasurable,
It emotionally and physically maims and kills.
***
Watch the person walking down the street,
Minding their own business and yet their eyes will drop as they pass,
Beaten into submission by humanity’s pain,
Made to feel constantly as part of the inferior class.
***
Passing judgement blindly,
Judging a book by its cover,
Feelings of disgust over a noticeable birthmark,
Or because the hand held is one divergent lover.
***
Perfection is an impossibility,
Humanity is well aware of this,
Yet it’s destructive power over those in pain,
Is a possible death kiss.
***
That person bullied to tears yesterday,
Has suddenly gone missing from daily life,
No longer feeling they belong anywhere,
Their heart shredded by humanities proverbial knife.
***
It’s the sad honest truth,
Humanity needs to feel more empathetic,
Love should be the order of the day,
And if seeing someone in pain, be more sympathetic.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Everyone is always having a silent battle that we know nothing about. The least we can do is to always be kind. And your poem encourages that. I loved it so much!
I am with you on this
This was amazing. I was bullied a long time (most of my life) and can relate to this. Thank you for writing! Very good!
