The Cycle of Fall

It is that time of year again
When the crickets still sing all night long
But the mosquitos have retired for the season
When you huddle and shiver under blankets and quilts
In the unexpected coolness of night
Sipping on a cup of hot chocolate
Snacking on pumpkin bread
You search out the space heater from where it
Has been hiding in the garage all summer
And pull out your ancient flannel nightie
Which makes you feel so safe, full and warm
Waking up in the coolness of morning
You throw on your favorite hoodie and sweatpants
Or maybe a tacky sweater and corduroys
To keep you cuddled, toasty and warm
From the misty chill in the air
Until within two or three hours
The sun has burned the coolness away and
You find yourself sweaty and sticky
Craving iced sweet tea and watermelon popsicles
So, you turn off the space heater
And crank up the air conditioner
That you thankfully did not put in the garage
When you took out the space heater
And you change into out a soft t-shirt and shorts
Because you are now
Officially
