The Courage to Disappear

It takes strength to plan an escape route even if you never use it

Carefully walking across the livingroom floor

In the darkness without turning on a light

Silently turning the knob of the front door

Walking into the blackness of the moonlit night

Leaving behind all personal things

Confident in her choice and yet uncertain

Her cellphone, watch, necklace, and rings

On the floor behind the front room curtains

From trebling lips came a soft "goodbye"\

As she walked to the mountain pass

Looking back once she breathed a sigh

Determined the momentum would last

Up the hillside in the night she went stumbling

With little difficulty finding her way

Onward she went groping and stumbling

Trying to beat the light of day

Walk on into the future was the thought in her head

Leaving the past behind

Looking down from the hillside into the river bed

She knew her body they would never find

Taking a step to make her leap

Courage overode the pain

This was promise she intended to keep

Her eyes closed and when they opened again

She realized through the falling tears

She had never opened the front door

She had only imagined she had the courage to disappear

And turned to go to bed once more

Still it was a great way to disappear
